The Islamic Center of Hamburg, investigated for alleged support to Hezbollah group
The Islamic Center of Hamburg, a Muslim religious association that owns a mosque in the German city, has been under investigation for several months for its alleged support to the pro-Iranian Lebanese movement Hezbollah. The German Interior Ministry announced in a statement on Wednesday, July 24, the prohibition of the association and « its affiliated organizations throughout Germany ».
The Islamic Center has been described by German authorities as « an extremist, Islamist organization pursuing unconstitutional objectives ». « Raids » were carried out on Wednesday morning at « 53 » properties owned by them throughout Germany. This organization spreads an extremist ideology « aimed against human dignity, women’s rights, independent justice, and our democratic state », denounced Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, quoted in the statement.
Additionally, it supports, along with its affiliated organizations, « Hezbollah terrorists and propagates aggressive antisemitism, » the minister claims. Extensive raids were also carried out against the targeted structures in November 2023. The seized material allowed to « confirm the suspicions » of the German authorities, the minister explains. The Center « pretends to give the impression of being a tolerant and purely religious institution, without any political project or connection. In reality, the investigation clearly shows that [it] not only acts in the religious sphere », writes the Interior Ministry.
